At Centerpoint, we recognize that we only have so much latitude regarding our vision and mission. After all, Jesus made our primary responsibilities quite clear. We are to go to people who do not understand the good news that 'God is not counting their sins against them' and we are to teach them how to live in relationship with Him. The question is how we will go about fulfilling this mandate in our particular local church.
Because Centerpoint has been in existence since 1969, we can look back and see the landscape of different methods used over the years to achieve our God given mission. From styles of music to methods of communication, things have changed dramatically over the last several decades. For example, today, we use a live band instead of a solo organist and large screen multi-media instead of overhead projectors and flannel boards. The important thing is that our core biblical message remains unchanged and that people develop a strong, meaningful and productive relationship with Jesus and His body. This is why we chose the following mission statement: To lead people into a healthy relationship with Jesus Christ.
Perhaps the best way for you to understand our vision and core values is for you to picture a house. Every house must have a solid foundation. Our foundation is Jesus Christ. Our outer walls are comprised of our mission: To lead people into a healthy relationship with Jesus Christ. But a house must also have inner walls. For our inner walls we are using material that has been tested and tried for centuries in the local church. The material seems impervious to cultural shifts. And to help you remember, all the materials start with a "G". Grace, Growth, Group, Gifts and Good Stewardship. These five G's are the measuring stick we use to determine our individual and corporate health as a church:
Grace is God's enabling power. It is His unmerited favor. The Bible says that "we are saved by grace, through faith" (Eph 2). Every follower of Jesus must have a grace relationship in order to be a healthy believer.
Growth is the natural result of health. We are committed to helping our members grow personally, physically, spiritually, emotionally, relationally and financially.
Group Life is fundamental to healthy Christian living. The "one another" statements in scripture are plentiful: love one another, serve one another, bear one another's burdens, etc... We believe that life change best happens in the context of relationships. Relationships are far better nurtured in small group settings as opposed to large gatherings.
Gifts play an enormous part in healthy spiritual living. God has given gifts to His people. This is clearly seen is scripture. If this is the case, then we can be certain that we will be evaluated based on how we use those gifts while on earth. We are deeply committed to helping believers discover, develop and deploy their spiritual gifts in the local church context.
Good Stewardship is a common theme throughout the bible. God is the owner of everything. We are His managers. He is the master. We are His servants. Because of this liberating truth, we are called to be faithful stewards of all he has placed in our care and He has promised to meet our every need according to His riches in glory.
